Paranormal Activity
During the Halloween weekend I went with a friend to see the movie Paranormal Activity. I’m not a big fan of modern suspense/horror movies because often they are just trying to gross you out. This one did not do that. Other than rough language and very brief sensuality, this film felt like the makers had some semblance of maturity.
Many reviews and articles were focused on comparisons with another movie that I won’t see, Saw VI. Paranormal Activity cost $15,000 to make and Saw VI costs $11,000,000. Yes, you are seeing a $10 million dollar difference. To date, Paranormal Activity has pulled in $84,780,000 while Saw VI has only harvested $22,824,000.
Trends Paranormal Activity bucked…
- Gone are expensive big name actors
- Gone are expensive props
- A small house instead of a big house
- Gone are excessive special effects (effects sparingly used)
- Gone are scenes to just gross you out
- You feel a respect for the world that is unseen (after the movie is over)
If ghost movies or movies that focus on more dangerous elements of the unseen world bother you, I wouldn’t suggest this movie. More goes on than simple scares. If Halloween didn’t work out for you, you can get some serious chills from this film.
